META BUILD at the 2025 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Living Environment

ZENITH’s Contribution to META BUILD at the 2025 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Living Environment

At the 2025 IEEE International Workshop on Metrology for Living Environment, held in Venice from June 11–13, 2025, ZENITH, a key partner in the META BUILD project, presented a groundbreaking approach to smart home heating. Their concept paper, titled “Integrating Predictive Power Market Modelling with Automated Demand-Side Management of Residential Heat Pumps,” showcased how artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies can revolutionize residential energy consumption.

Smart Energy Savings with AI: The Future of Home Heating

As Europe transitions to renewable energy sources, balancing electricity supply and demand has become increasingly challenging. The ZENITH-led Greek pilot project addresses this issue by developing an intelligent system that predicts electricity market prices a day in advance. This foresight allows the system to automatically adjust heating schedules, pre-heating homes during times of cheaper electricity - often when renewable energy is abundant - and reducing energy use during peak price periods, such as evenings.

Preliminary tests in the Greek pilot have shown promising results, indicating that this approach not only helps households save on energy bills without sacrificing comfort but also contributes to grid stability and better utilization of green energy. As adoption of heat pumps increases across Europe, such smart systems could play a pivotal role in the continent's clean energy transition.

The Role of ZENITH within META BUILD

ZENITH is a prominent partner in the META BUILD project, which aims to accelerate the decarbonization of buildings across Europe. META BUILD focuses on integrating advanced technologies, such as heat pumps, photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) systems, and second-life batteries, into residential and commercial buildings. The project utilizes AI-driven Digital Twins to optimize energy performance and facilitate the transition to low-carbon heating and cooling solutions. ZENITH’s contribution to META BUILD includes developing and implementing smart energy management systems that enhance the efficiency and sustainability of building energy systems. Their work aligns with META BUILD's objectives to provide scalable solutions for building electrification and energy efficiency, integrate renewable energy sources, and employ AI-driven optimization for real-time monitoring and enhancement of building energy performance.

The Vision of META BUILD

META BUILD envisions a future where buildings are not only energy-efficient but also actively contribute to the decarbonization of the energy sector. By integrating renewable energy sources, advanced energy storage solutions, and intelligent energy management systems, META BUILD aims to create buildings that are resilient, sustainable, and capable of adapting to the evolving energy landscape. The project's pilot sites in Austria, Croatia, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain serve as testbeds for these innovative technologies, demonstrating their feasibility and scalability. Through these efforts, META BUILD seeks to set a new standard for sustainable building practices and contribute to Europe's climate goals.

ZENITH's participation in the IEEE MetroLivEnv 2025 workshop underscores their commitment to advancing smart energy solutions and their integral role in the META BUILD project. Their innovative approach to smart home heating exemplifies the potential of AI and IoT technologies in transforming the built environment and supporting the transition to a sustainable energy future
