About Front Runner #1 

Front Runner #1 is located in Vienna, Austria, and aims to retrofit a residential building with a total surface area of 7,000 m² and an annual heat energy demand of 153 kWh/m². 

The retrofit will be extensive, addressing basic structures, thermal insulation, and the electrification of thermal energy demand. Currently heated by 58 gas boilers, the goal is to fully decarbonise the energy demand through a combination of electrification (Heat Pumps) with natural refrigerant, self-production (Photovoltaics), storage (Electrical and Thermal), and efficient control (Model-predictive). 

The building belongs to Sozialbau AG, a social housing company based in Austria and Vienna. As a non-profit organization, Sozialbau faces unique economic and social challenges that must be addressed throughout the project.
